Came across an old article from Dr. Dobb's while looking for something completely unrelated. It talks about some of the challenges faced by the developers of the system back then known as the NTC Ship Manager, then SafeNet, and now known as NS5, an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for the maritime shipping industry which I worked on some years ago (NS5, today, uses Java and MySQL). Here is an article about Titanium form 1993, claiming it outpeforms "traditional relational databases" by 5 to 1:
